Back in December, I was checking out the Detroit Free Press Marathon website and noticed they had a tab for Ambassador Application. Curious as usual, I applied. The duties of this volunteer application for the 2016 Detroit Free Press Marathon were to spread the word of the race in the running communities, support the marathon planing staff by attending meetings and offering input, volunteering at the expo, and simply sharing your love of running and your journey to crossing the finish line in Detroit with the community! With that I filled in the requested information and hit SEND.
In early January I was working out with 2 minutes left and got a call from a number in Detroit I didn’t recognize. With only 2 minutes of Upper Fix to go, I let it go to voice mail. It turns out it was a call letting me know I was accepted as one out of 12 race ambassadors!!! I could not believe it! I was chosen to share my love for a sport that has changed my life in a city that I adore and call my home and a race that has challenged me and is world class! WOW! Blessed!
My official ambassadorship started February 1st, and tonight was our first meeting downtown. We met at race headquarters in a formal meeting room and after a FUN round of introductions where we had to tell 2 truths and one lie. My lie was I love baseball and everyone guessed it right away! Sorry sports fans!
We went through some information about our roles, had a lot of laughs and got to approve our bios that will be published soon! It was so inspiring to be in a room full of fellow runners, Barbara Bennage, the executive Race Director and the other team members that pull together the event!
I am so excited to what the year will hold and can not wait for you to join me on my journey to completing 26.2 in the D! I am also excited to get to know this amazing group of ambassadors! Not everyone is pictured, but head over to the Detroit Free Press Marathon Website to check out all of their bios and social medial links!
Please join me in what will be an amazing weekend! There are kids runs, a 5K, international half marathon and US Half Marathon, a marathon relay and the full marathon which is the only marathon with an underwater mile! It is international too! Use the code “runfastmama” for 10% off you entry at the registration site, this is good until October 10, 2016 but don’t delay! I want you to join me in this amazing journey!
